SUNDAY, September 21, 2008 One man charged in a vehicle pursuit by police ROCKEFELLER TOWNSHIP – A 45 year old Sunbury man faces numerous charges after he tried to flee police Saturday evening in Northumberland and Snyder Counties. State police at Stonington say they received a call after the suspect was spotted trying to steal gasoline from a 400-gallon storage tank at R-H Stahl and Sons farm along Route 890 in Rockefeller Township, Northumberland County. Police say John Stahl called police and then tried to approach the suspect who was sitting in his minivan. At that point the man nearly struck the victim as he accelerated in reverse, struck a barrel and fled the scene. A Sunbury police officer spotted the vehicle driving in a careless manner in the area of the Veterans Bridge. Police say the driver refused to stop, fled through Shamokin Dam, and into Northumberland and then back into the city of Sunbury where he almost struck a patrol car operated by officer Jamie Quinn. Police were eventually able to box in the mini van and end the pursuit. Investigators have not yet released the name of the suspect who will be charged with numerous counts including DUI, reckless endangerment, fleeing and eluding police and numerous traffic violations. He was locked up in Snyder County on a previous parole detainer. Police from Sunbury, Shamokin Dam, Point Township and Northumberland assisted State Police. (AP) - An eight-alarm fire has severely damaged a historic mansion in central Pennsylvania. Investigators believe faulty electrical wiring may have caused the blaze at the 138-year-old Valentine House in Bellefonte. The fire started shortly after 1 a.m. Friday and seriously damaged the second and third floors. Nine people who lived in apartments in the home escaped; no serious injuries were reported. Fire officials say a sprinkler system had recently been installed in the building, but it hadn't been activated yet. COCHRANTON, Pa. (AP) - Western Pennsylvania coroners and forensic specialists are trying to determine the origins of decades-old skeletal remains found in an abandoned stairwell. Crawford County Coroner Pat McHenry says the remains were found Tuesday by Dave Simmons, who was renovating a bathroom in his grandparents home in northwestern Pennsylvania. McHenry says Simmons moved a loose board and found the bones in what appears to be a stairwell no one even knew existed. McHenry says the skeletons appear to be those of a 20-year-old man and a teenage girl who many have died more than 45 years ago. Forensic specialist Dennis Dirkmaat of Mercyhurst College in Erie believes the full skeleton belongs to the male and the partial skull is that of the woman. HARRISBURG, Pa.
