DANVILLE – Montour County Commissioners struck a solemn tone as they approved a $11.2 million budget that includes a tax increase of more than five mills.
They said rising costs, higher health care premiums, along with the loss of a second-floor lease, made the hike unavoidable.
Commissioner Chairman Rebecca Dressler said the budget process was exhaustingly difficult, and some taxpayers will see increases of more than $100 per year. Commissioner Trevor Finn said many boards and municipalities face the same pressures and are being forced to raise taxes.
Finn said the county also lost an anticipated $180,000 when the stalled state budget prevented an agency from leasing the second floor of the county administration building.
