HERNDON — Tragedy in Herndon, state police say a 74-year-old Dalmatia man died after a train struck his vehicle Sunday afternoon. State police say the crash happened at 12:40pm at Railroad and Spruce streets in Northumberland County.
Troopers say Darwin Whitmer attempted to drive a car through the railroad crossing when a Norfolk Southern train hit the vehicle. Investigators say Whitmer was not wearing a seat belt and suffered fatal injuries. The crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact state police in Stonington.
