HARRISBURG — State officials are reminding Pennsylvanians to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as clocks “spring forward” this weekend. The Shapiro Administration says changing alarm batteries during the time change can help prevent deadly home fires.
State Fire Commissioner Tom Cook says working smoke alarms can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half. Officials report Pennsylvania has already recorded 26 fire fatalities this year through March 2.
Safety experts recommend installing alarms on every floor and near sleeping areas. Officials say families should also create and practice home escape plans with two exits and a meeting place outside. More fire safety information is available through the Ready PA website.
