WASHINGTON — In Washington DC, Governor Josh Shapiro praised firefighters and highlighted new funding proposals during a national legislative conference . Officials said Gov. Shapiro spoke at the International Association of Fire Fighters Legislative Conference in Washington.
He spoke firsthand about the incident last year, the arsonist who attacked the governor’s mansion in Harrisburg, “As my wife and I gathered our kids and our dogs and rushed out of the house, those local firefighters from Harrisburg rushed in. That image of us passing in the hallways is seared in my memory. I will never ever forget that. They worked quickly with great professionalism to put out the fire.”
The governor said his proposed 2026–27 state budget nearly doubles funding for fire companies. Shapiro said the plan includes $30 million in grants for equipment purchases and station repairs.
