HARRISBURG — The state Game Commission says prescribed burns are underway across the state, including in our area this week. They say the burning of the ground, brush and low trees was conducted in White Deer Township, Union County, and Catawissa Township, Columbia County.
The state says the seasonal effort improves wildlife habitat and boosts hunting opportunities. They say wildlife often return quickly, benefiting hunters and watchers. They say burns affect small areas, and hens can re-nest if needed.
Officials say most burns happen in April and May, with an interactive map available to track locations. They say posted signs will alert visitors, and specific areas close only on burn days. More info at huntfish.pa.gov.
