HERSHEY, Pa. — WGAL reports charges were filed against the parents of a 17-month-old child who was injured after reaching into a wolf enclosure at ZooAmerica in Hershey.
According to WGAL, authorities said the child crawled through a small opening in a perimeter fence on Saturday, reached the primary metal fence of the wolf habitat, and put a hand through the enclosure.
One of the wolves inside the enclosure then “instinctively and naturally” grabbed the child’s hand with its mouth, according to police.
Officials said bystanders stepped in and helped pull the toddler away. According to police, the child suffered minor injuries.
Authorities said the child’s parents, 43-year-old Carrie Sortor and 61-year-old Stephen Wilson, both of Lititz, were sitting on a bench about 25 to 30 feet away when the incident happened.
Police said the parents appeared to be looking at their cellphones and only looked up after hearing commotion near the enclosure.
