LOWER AUGUSTA — A pickup truck collided with a southbound train Saturday afternoon near Penns Tavern south of Sunbury. State police say the crash happened around 3:18pm on the 7000 block of State Route 147.
Troopers say 23-year-old Robert Scheerer of Mill Hall was driving a pickup truck and attempting to turn onto River Road and cross the tracks. Investigators say, for unknown reasons, the driver did not see or hear the approaching Norfolk Southern train.
Police say the train struck the bed of the pickup during the attempted crossing. Scheerer and an adult passenger were transported to a hospital for suspected injuries.
State police say the investigation remains ongoing.
