SELINSGROVE — Susquehanna University and the Chesapeake Conservancy have reached an environmental milestone in efforts to restore local waterways. Officials say 100,000 “live stakes” have been collected for streamside buffer projects across Pennsylvania.
Live stakes are live cuttings from trees and shrubs which are planted, and then grow, helping stabilize stream banks, reduce runoff, and support wildlife habitat. The Live Stake Collaborative says more than 1,000 volunteers have contributed thousands of hours since 2019. They aim to reach 200,000 live stakes planted in the coming years.
