RED ROCK — A rescue unfolded morning after a hiker reportedly fell about 60 feet along a trail at Ricketts Glen State Park.
North Mountain Fire Company in Columbia County says crews were dispatched around 10:45am and found the victim seriously injured at the bottom of a steep, rugged ravine. The fall was along the park’s slippery Falls Trail.
Mutual aid crews from Columbia and Luzerne counties responded, including firefighters from Benton, Unityville, Millville, Sweet Valley, Huntington Valley, Back Mountain, and Mocanaqua.
Kunkle Ambulance provided EMS support while state park rangers assisted rescuers. Officials say crews worked about 3½ hours before the victim was finally extracted and flown by Life Flight for treatment.
Multiple serious and sometimes fatal hiking accidents have occurred at Ricketts Glen over the years. A 69-year-old woman died after falling down an embankment in 2022, while another rescue involved a reported 50-foot fall in 2012. Authorities say the park’s steep, rocky, and often wet trails can quickly become dangerous for hikers.
