NORTHUMBERLAND — Rain changed Memorial Day plans in Sunbury and Northumberland, but it did not quiet the meaning of the day.
About 100 people filled the American Legion Post 44 near Northumberland ballroom after inclement weather canceled the scheduled parade. The service included Shikellamy JROTC members and a reading of the Gettysburg Address. Local veterans advocate John Deppen said, there is no such thing as a “Happy Memorial Day.” He said, “This is not doorbuster day. This is not drunk boating day. This, with all due respect, is not Little League Day. This is Memorial Day. It is the one day set aside to remember and honor the men and women who wore our country’s uniform.”
Deppen said the holiday should not be treated like a sales event or fireworks celebration. He called Memorial Day the nation’s most somber holiday. Sunbury also moved its ceremony indoors, with the service held at American Legion Post 201.
