LEWISBURG — Larry Winans, a retired Lewisburg dentist and co-founder of Jackass Brewing Company, has died after suffering cardiac arrest during the swim portion of a local Ironman 70.3 event. Friends say the triathlon was the Happy Valley Half-Triathlon in and around State College and Winans died at Hershey Medical Center
The brewery says Winans and co-founder Skip Kratzer started as friends with a homebrewing hobby before opening Jackass Brewing in Lewisburg in March 2020. The business later expanded to Williamsport in 2023, restoring an old warehouse into a large taproom, restaurant, and event space.
Winans spent 25 years as a dentist in Lewisburg before leaving the profession to make beer full-time. Jackass Brewing says both locations will continue operating as a tribute to the dream Winans helped build.
