HARRISBURG — A state corrections committee has endorsed plans to close two Pennsylvania prisons, despite strong pushback from local lawmakers. The Department of Corrections says shutting down Rockview in Centre County and the Quehanna Boot Camp in Clearfield County could save $100 million annually.
Officials say nearly 900 staff members will be offered jobs at equal pay in nearby facilities, though the corrections officers’ union doubts the state’s projected savings. Rockview, built during World War I, currently employs 658 people and sits on 5,700 acres. Quehanna, opened in 1992, employs 234 and was only half-full in July.
