HARRISBURG — A local state senator says he plans to introduce legislation restoring Pennsylvania’s traditional Monday opening of rifle deer season. PA Sen. Gene Yaw says the change would return the opener to the first Monday after Thanksgiving.
For decades, that Monday marked the start of firearms deer season statewide. In 2019, the Pennsylvania Game Commission moved the opener to the Saturday after Thanksgiving, citing participation goals. The Game Commission now wants to move the opener up to the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Sen. Yaw says rural businesses, fire companies, and hunting camps have suffered under the Saturday schedule. He says families have struggled with conflicts between Thanksgiving gatherings and the season opener.
