POTTSVILLE — US Congressman Dan Meuser is out with his first official response to proposed detention centers in Schuylkill and Berks counties.
Congressman Meuser says his office has been working for months with the US Department of Homeland Security to prepare the way for the thousands of detainees headed to Schuylkill and Berks counties.
He says DHS will offset millions of dollars in lost local tax revenue and provide needed funding for infrastructure upgrades, including utilities, emergency management, and local roadways. Cong. Meuser says the agency also plans to bring in federal and private emergency services to limit strain on local responders.
Once occupied, he says the facilities would house single adults only and include federal law enforcement security. Meuser says a community relations board will be created for oversight and transparency. County leaders continue to call for written guarantees, and public opposition remain strong in both counties.
