WINFIELD — Turtle Creek is getting some more attention this year.
Union County conservation leaders say a major Winfield area creek restoration project is improving water quality while supporting local agriculture. DEP officials recently toured the Turtle Creek site with the Union County Conservation District and US Fish and Wildlife Service.
All were promoting the opening of the 2026 Growing Greener grant program. Officials say Phase One restored more than 3,200 feet of streambank using a 2024 grant worth nearly $318,000.
Another $370,000 grant will support the next phase upstream. The long-term goal is restoring 1.67 miles of stream and wetlands by 2029. Applications for the next Growing Greener grant round remain open through . The Turtle Creek work is underway now in Union County.
