RIVERSIDE — The zoning hearing board in Riverside denied a rezoning request Tuesday that would have allowed the former Riverside Elementary School to be converted into apartment buildings. According to the Press Enterprise the denial came after representatives of Merck & Co. informed the board groundwater contamination on the property of its Merck Cherokee Plant could spread into neighboring wells. Dr. Tariq Rahman of Riverside bought the old schoolhouse property on Avenue A for roughly $800,000 in October of 2025. During public comment, several borough council members present raised concerns about contamination.
