HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania drivers face a new distracted driving penalty starting . PennDOT says drivers convicted under Paul Miller’s Law will pay a $50 fine, plus court costs and fees.
At a news conference this week, with a hearse in the background, Eileen Miller, whose son Paul was killed by a distracted driver, says choices behind the wheel matter. She said, “This law has never ever been about punishment. It’s always been about saving lives. I never want another parent to have to go to a morgue to have to identify their child after something so preventable as distracted driving.”
The law bans hand-held phone use while driving, even while stopped in traffic or at a red light. PennDOT and state police are urging drivers to put phones down, slow down and never drive impaired during the busy summer travel season.
