HARRISBURG — Measles are spreading across the state. The Pennsylvania Department of Health says Northumberland County now has 6 confirmed measles cases. State health officials say Pennsylvania has reported 81 measles cases so far this year.
The department says the largest numbers are in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, with 38 and 20 cases. Berks and Dauphin counties each have 2 cases, and York County has 1.
Health officials say measles is highly contagious and can remain in the air for up to 2 hours. Symptoms can include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash. Measles can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling, and permanent hearing loss.
The department says vaccination provides the best protection against measles. Anyone with questions can go to health.pa.gov.
