SUNBURY — Sunbury Municipal Authority crews closed some of the city’s flood closure structures Monday, and as we hear from Mark Lawrence, officials say it all went well.
It was a practice drill, as Jared Geise says crews assembled four of the structures. They were near Zimmerman’s Motors, near the VFW on Shikellamy Avenue, at 10th Street, and at one other location.
Geise says several newer employees received their first opportunity to practice the closure procedures during the exercise. The authority maintains Sunbury’s flood protection system along the Susquehanna River and Shamokin Creek. The system includes levees, floodwalls, pumping stations, and the closure structures.
Officials say the exercises help workers practice installation procedures before flooding threatens the city. Geise says all four closures were completed without problems, giving crews hands-on experience.
