SHAMOKIN DAM — Shamokin Dam Borough has issued emergency water restrictions after recent storms left its water treatment system unable to produce enough usable water. Officials say excessive sediment in the Susquehanna River has overwhelmed treatment equipment.
Mayor Donald Musser says the borough’s water remains safe to drink, but the reservoir is nearing a critically low level. Outdoor watering and other non-essential uses, including washing vehicles, driveways, and sidewalks, are now prohibited.
Residents are being asked to conserve water immediately until conditions improve. Officials say the restrictions are intended to preserve enough water for essential needs.

Emergency Water Restriction Announcement Date: 8/4/2026
Shamokin Dam Water customers. Due to the recent storm conditions affecting our region, north and northwest of the Borough, we must implement emergency water restrictions to conserve our precious water resources. We have been unable to produce usable water. Because our equipment is overwhelmed with the amount of sediment in the river. This decision is made to ensure that we can provide adequate water supply for essential uses.
Effective Immediately: No Outdoor watering • All non-essential water uses such as washing vehicles, driveways, or sidewalks are restricted. • All residents are encouraged to use water-saving techniques indoors and outdoors.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this critical time. Together, we can work to conserve water and protect our community’s resources.
